Iodine is literally the raw material for thyroid hormone. Thyroxine (T4) is built from four iodine molecules, and triiodothyronine (T3), the active hormone your body actually uses, is built from three. Without enough raw iodine, there’s simply no material to make it happen. Today, most people are iodine deficient: our soils are depleted, our food supply is lower in minerals across the board, and many people have switched from iodized salt to sea salt, pink salt, or gourmet salt, which contain even less iodine. It feels like the healthier choice, but over time it quietly starves the thyroid of the one nutrient it needs most.

Iodine needs backup: the liver, the cells, and your minerals

The liver converts T4 into T3. Your thyroid makes mostly T4, and T4 does nothing for you until it’s converted into T3, the active hormone that drives your metabolism, your fat burning, your hair, your skin, your hydration, and your digestion. That conversion happens in the liver. Research on thyroid hormone metabolism confirms that in adults, between 70% and 90% of circulating T3 comes from this peripheral conversion rather than direct thyroid secretion, with the liver as one of the main sites. So if your liver is sluggish, congested, inflamed, or overwhelmed by toxins, that conversion doesn’t happen, even with plenty of T4 on board. And when the thyroid is sluggish, cellular energy is low, which slows detoxification even further, worsening the liver, which worsens the thyroid again. This is exactly why someone can have a normal TSH, a normal T4, and still be functionally hypothyroid. The real question is whether your doctor is testing free T3 and reverse T3. Reverse T3 rises when your body is in stress mode and shuts down the metabolism: am I being chased by a tiger, is a famine coming, I need to survive, so I’m holding onto every bit of fat I can. Fat is a great survival mechanism. We don’t like it, but it kept us alive. So you might be making plenty of hormone, T4, and it’s simply not being converted into T3.
Your liver is under more pressure than ever. Fatty liver disease is at an all-time high even as alcohol consumption has dropped, which tells you it isn’t only about alcohol. Recent research estimates U.S. adult prevalence somewhere between roughly a quarter and nearly 40%, and it often goes undetected because it causes no obvious symptoms early on. If your HRT, peptides, or GLPs are making you feel worse instead of better, it’s often because your liver can’t actually process and assimilate them; you can’t throw exogenous hormones or peptides into a system whose processing plant isn’t working.
Your cells have to respond to the hormone. Thyroid hormone doesn’t create energy by magic.
