Study Reveals Cellphone Use Fueling Aggression and Hallucinations in Teens

There’s no denying it—something is deeply wrong with the mental well-being of today’s adolescents. Feelings of aggression, anger, and even hallucinations are rising at alarming rates among teens, and a new study suggests that the culprit may be the age at which kids get their first cell phone.

A report by Sapien Labs reveals that both in the U.S. and India, these mental health issues are becoming more prevalent as children acquire smartphones at younger and younger ages. Researchers warn that urgent action is needed to prevent a future defined by rising aggression and violence. Their recommendation? Delay giving kids a smartphone until at least 8th grade (around age 13) to allow them to develop critical social skills and emotional resilience.

The study, which surveyed 10,475 teens ages 13-17, highlights a disturbing trend: the younger a child gets their first phone, the worse their mental health outcomes—especially in terms of anger, aggression, irritability, and detachment from reality.

  • 37% reported having suicidal thoughts.

What’s even more concerning is that younger teens (13-year-olds) reported significantly higher rates of aggression, hallucinations, and irritability than older teens (17-year-olds). This suggests that these issues are escalating in younger age groups and that mental health decline is happening earlier than ever before.

The increase in anger and aggression was particularly pronounced in girls—a trend the study’s authors describe as deeply concerning.

Early Smartphone Use Directly Linked to Rising Aggression

The study found a strong connection between early smartphone use and increased aggression and anger in teens. Researchers discovered that when they adjusted their data for the age at which a teen got their first smartphone, the age-related differences in aggression disappeared.

This means that getting a smartphone at a younger age likely increases aggression, anger, and irritability over time.

The study authors went even further, stating that if this trend continues, we could be heading toward a more violent future as more children are exposed to smartphones at earlier ages.

Currently:

  • The 17-year-olds in the study typically got their first cell phone at age 11 or 12.
  • The 13-year-olds got theirs even younger—at age 10.

Why Would Early Smartphone Use Contribute to Mental Health Decline?

The researchers admitted that it’s not entirely clear why early smartphone exposure is so damaging, but they highlighted several possible reasons:
