This natural alchemy energizes the methionine as it releases its methyl group into the orbit of cellular enzymes, called methyl transferases.
There are about 400 non methyl transferase reactions that produce fundamental reactions that affect our health, quality of life and survival.
What Can Disrupt Methylation?
Some of us are born with genes that hinder our ability to methylate. In addition to that, one large issue we are facing is the prevalence of glyphosate, or Roundup, has been sprayed on much of our food sources.
Glyphosate disrupts the pancreatic enzymes that metabolize proteins. It mimics glycine, one of the most prevalent of the amino acids that form the basic building blocks of life and a key player in our methylation pathways.
Glycine is necessary for protein digestion. When the body is tricked by the glyphosate that it is already producing glycine, it stops producing the real glycine and impairs our ability to properly methylate and digest protein. Additionally, other methylation pathways that can be disrupted include hormone balance, fat metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, and the carrying of our neurotransmitters across our blood-brain barrier so we can use them for sleep and mood regulation.

Homocysteine is a potentially toxic byproduct in the methylation process. When SAM donates it’s methyl group, it becomes S-adenosyl-homocysteine (SAH), a free radical that is able to combine with other reactive molecules within the cell or in the bloodstream. Then, inside the cell, homocysteine is likely to react with copper because their attraction is strong enough to pull copper out of its binding sites in enzymes, including the cytochrome enzymes of the mitochondria. This interrupts electron flow and thereby lowers the cellular energy. This is why patients with chronic fatigue tend to have high homocysteine levels.
