Autophagy is a term that has become very popular lately and for good reason. It is a biological process that removes the body’s accumulated toxins and recycles damaged cell components.
The term autophagy means “self-eating,” where cells use their own components to rebuild new cells. It is activated primarily when you are experiencing energy deprivation or exercise. It is stimulated by lowering insulin and a ketogenic diet, and it helps combat Free Radicals.
First, understanding “Autophagy” means understanding “Free Radicals.”
What is a Free Radical?
A free radical is an atom or molecule with a single unpaired electron in its outer layer. Most free radicals are very reactive and cause oxidative damage. That oxidation can be lowered by antioxidants and other reducing agents. Mitochondria are the cell’s energy manufacturers that generate ATP, also known as adenosine triphosphate. This is true cellular energy.
This process occurs by reacting hydrocarbons from calories or sunlight with oxygen. The classical Free Radical Theory of Aging proposes that energy generation by the mitochondria damages mitochondria macromolecules, including mitochondrial DNA which then promotes aging. After a certain amount, this produces too many reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes cell death and degradation.
Age-related impairments in the mitochondrial respiratory chain decrease ATP synthesis, damage DNA, and make these cells more susceptible to oxidative stress.
How Does Hormesis Increase Autophagy?
Hormesis is a serving-specific response to a toxin or a stressor that makes the organism stronger than it was before. The idea is that you experience a small shock that makes the body want to deal with it better in the future and become more resilient. Examples of hormetic stressors include caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, exercise, and dietary phytonutrients.
Factors that Inhibit Autophagy and Induce Mitochondrial Aging
1. Insulin and High Glucose
Insulin and glucose environments generate free radicals and promote oxidative stress and inflammation. The insulin signaling pathway is one of the main mechanisms of accelerated aging.

1. Not Fasting Long Enough
In general, food is in your stomach for about 4.5 hours. Most people count their fasting window from the time they stop eating when you should be counting from 5 hours after you eat.
2. Drinking fatty coffee
Even though the added fat to the coffee doesn’t stimulate insulin, it still puts you in a “fed” state as you are consuming calories. Ketone bodies stimulate autophagy. Excess calories whether they come from MCT oil or other fats will stop autophagy.
3. Supplementing with BCAAs or Branched Chain Amino Acids
These will kick you out of ketosis and halt autophagy. They can be beneficial to take during exercise to build muscle.
4. Consuming Artificial Sweeteners
Most fake sweeteners will raise insulin. Aspartame, Saccharin, and agave will all create an insulin response that immediately turns off autophagy. Stevia and xylitol have a much less effect on insulin, if any.
5. Consuming Supplements with Calories
