As a side effect of significant weight loss, some men and women will experience hair loss. This type of hair loss is known as telogen effluvium.
Telogen effluvium is a temporary condition, it’s not permanent hair loss. Hair follicles enter a resting phase prematurely and shed more hair than usual. Telogen effluvium is typically triggered by a significant physiological stressor, such as rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal changes.
Why Telogen Effluvium Happens
When the body experiences a sudden and substantial caloric deficit, especially if crash dieting, it may prioritize essential bodily functions over hair growth.
Hair loss occurs as a result of more hairs entering the resting (telogen) phase, leading to increased shedding and noticeable hair loss, including a receding hairline, thinning hair and even bald spots. This shedding usually occurs a few months after the weight loss and can persist for several months before normal hair growth resumes.
It’s important to note that not everyone who undergoes weight loss will experience hair loss, and the severity and duration can vary among individuals. Additionally, the hair loss associated with weight loss is typically temporary, and hair growth usually resumes once the body adjusts to the new weight or caloric intake.
Is Weight Loss Considered A Stressor?
Most people, when they diet, not only lower their caloric intake, but they also increase their cardio exercise and lower their nutrient intake; all three of these factors increase the “stress” hormones in the body.
When the body senses these “stressors”, it may perceive it as a form of stress or famine and respond by releasing stress hormones such as cortisol.
Here’s how it happens:
- Caloric restriction. When you reduce your caloric intake for weight loss, your body may interpret it as a period of limited food availability. In response, it activates physiological mechanisms to conserve energy and maintain essential bodily functions. This can trigger an increase in stress hormone release, including cortisol. The body sacrifices parts of the body that aren’t necessary for survival, like hair, in order to preserve parts of the body that are more important, like the essential organs.
- Thyroid hormones change. When the body perceives stress, it will cause the inactive hormone T4 to convert into the “stressed hormone” REVERSE T3 instead of the active, energy-inducing T3. Reverse T3 tells the body it is in “survival” mode, signaling the need to slow the metabolism, store belly fat to protect the organs, and to sacrifice non essential things such as hair.
- Psychological stress. Dieting can also induce psychological stress, as it often involves changes in eating habits, food choices, and a focus on weight loss goals. Psychological stress can contribute to the release of stress hormones as well.
- Cortisol and metabolism. Cortisol plays a role in regulating metabolism, including the breakdown of stored glycogen (glucose) to provide energy. In the context of dieting, increased cortisol levels can help mobilize stored energy sources to compensate for the calorie deficit.
Insulin Resistance and Hair Loss
While losing weight puts additional stress on the body, other considerations need to be taken into account in order to maintain hair growth.
Two main causes of hair loss are Toxicity and Insulin Resistance. If you are dieting incorrectly or not healthy eating, not only will you lose hair from the stress it puts on the body but you won’t be addressing Insulin Resistance, which is what leads to hair loss and fat accumulation.
Insulin Resistance increases the levels of androgens in the body, and those androgens convert into DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone. DHT is known to clog the hair follicle, hindering its ability to absorb the needed protein and minerals for healthy hair growth.
Furthermore, if you don’t mitigate the toxic exposure of heavy metals, radiation, and xeno-estrogens that come through diet, environment and technology, hair loss will be even worse during a dieting period.
Ways to Avoid Hair Loss From Weight Loss
Although it’s common to lose hair during weight loss, there are definitely ways to avoid hair loss from weight loss.
The goal is to lose fat weight while minimizing stress in the body and giving the body the nutrients it needs to balance hormones and maintain healthy hair.
Here are my tips on avoiding hair loss from weight loss.
Top 3 Supplements to Help Avoid Hair Loss From Weight Loss
Accelerated Fast®™
By using Accelerated Fast®™ to lower blood sugar and reverse Insulin Resistance, you are addressing one of the main causes of hair loss. Additionally, as you enter a state of ketosis, burning your own body fat for energy, you easily can intermittent fast without “stressing” the body. Accelerated Fast®™ helps maintain muscle mass while losing fat weight, detoxes the liver of toxins and liver fat that contribute to hair loss, and reduces inflammation that contributes to hair loss.
Acceleradine® Iodine
Iodine helps regulate estrogen, detox toxins and radiation that speed up hair loss, and can help support optimal thyroid function which is essential for healthy hair. It also helps detox the hair follicle cells of fluoride, heavy metals and radiation.
Acceleradine® increases ATP in the cells, which is your energy, by 18 times! As a result, you have more energy during periods of dieting, while giving your cells the energy to optimize weight loss, detoxification, and overall function.
Accelerated Thyroid®
Dieting can lead to a slow metabolism and thyroid. Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid, leads to hair loss. Accelerated Thyroid® helps reverse hypothyroidism, supports proper thyroid detoxification and function to keep the metabolism and hair growth optimized.
Additional Hair Loss Prevention Supplements
Liquid BioCell Collagen
Collagen is essential for hair health. On average, the body loses collagen starting at the age of 30, and without proper collagen in the diet, hair loss will be accelerated. Add in the stress from dieting and lower protein intake, and collagen supplied to the hair will be even less.
Liquid BioCell Collagen proved a naturally occurring matrix of hydrolyze collagen, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate. This promotes healthier, thicker hair, healthier joints, and younger looking skin. Furthermore, this formula is anti-inflammatory and reduces oxidative stress— two factors that worsen hair loss.
Accelerated Ancient Salt™
Trace minerals are usually low in someone dieting for weight loss; these trace minerals are essential for hair growth. Accelerated Ancient Salt™ has over 62 minerals in addition to scalar frequencies to support detoxification from radiation and other toxins that could contribute to hair loss.
X49 Stem Cell Activation Patch
The X49 patch aids in boosting the production of AHK-Cu, a copper peptide that enhances hair density by promoting hair growth while also preventing hair loss. The immune system’s capacity to weaken foreign pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites can be enhanced by Accelerated Silver™.
The promotion of new blood vessels is induced by AHK-Cu through the release of VEGF. When dieting and with age, blood supply to the scalp lessens, leading to hair loss. AHK-Cu promotes new blood vessels by causing the release of VEGF. Blood flow is not just delivered to existing hair follicles, but also stimulates the growth of new hair follicles and improves the size of the hair follicles.
Accelerated Scalar Copper®™
Copper is now being recognized as a key part of successful weight loss. Obesity is a downstream effect of the high consumption of Fructose in the Standard American Diet and processed foods; fructose causes an accelerated chelation rate of Copper throughout the body, and this is connected to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Insulin Resistance. Copper is also known to prevent gray hair and is directly needed for hair growth.
MyVitalC
MyVitalC is Carbon 60, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to help with faster and thicker hair growth in addition to combating oxidative stress that leads to hair loss. Additionally, it helps extend lifespan, improve sleep, diminish wrinkles, strengthen bones, improve performance, and more.
Magnesium Breakthrough
The hair follicle’s response to DHT can be lessened by magnesium, the unwanted effects of calcium on the hair can be neutralized, and magnesium can provide the hair with the necessary nutrients to promote ideal growth.
The hair follicle can be protected from the negative effects of DHT by the presence of magnesium, which also counteracts the harmful effects of calcium on hair growth.
Additionally, magnesium is essential for optimal hair growth and provides the necessary nutrients for its sustenance. Magnesium Breakthrough is a potent magnesium formulation of 7 types of magnesium.
Nucnomore®
Radiation is known to cause hair loss; compounded with the stress of dieting, hair loss is worsened. Nucnomore® helps eliminate all non-ionizing and ionizing radiation in the body.
Accelerated Colloidal Silver™
When the immune system suffers, the body perceives this as a stressor and will cause weight loss plateaus and hair loss among other symptoms. Accelerated Colloidal Silver™ helps strengthen the immune system’s ability to “devitalize” foreign pathogens including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
Healthy Eating Habits to Help Avoid Hair Loss From Weight Loss
Intermittent Fasting
While in ketosis from Accelerated Fast®™, intermittent fasting becomes very effective in helping with weight loss without stressing the hair follicles. Intermittent fasting reverses insulin resistance, reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, and heals the gut for better nutrient absorption needed for hair growth.
Eat Wild Animal Protein
Protein is not only one of the building blocks for muscles and tissues but also for hair. Most people dieting aren’t consuming enough protein and this is a major cause of hair loss.
Wild animal protein from animals like bison, lamb, elk, deer, and wild fish, provide more nutrient-dense protein than any other source. In addition to being essential for weight loss, protein also helps with suppressing appetite and maintaining muscle mass as the body loses fat. Lastly, when the body registers the intake of amino acids from protein, it no longer “stresses” that it is in a starvation state that causes hair loss. Prioritizing protein is KEY to weight loss without hair loss.
Eliminate Certain Vegetables
Most people consume more vegetables and less protein while dieting for weight loss. Some of those vegetables could be clogging detoxification in the body, causing nutrient malabsorption and actually leading to hair loss. Eliminate vegetables that contain sulfur, oxalates, mold and lectins to help encourage hair growth.
