Whacky Water Retention: Do You Feel Like You Are Floating in Water?

3 Water Retention Myths to Watch For:

Myth #1: We always need to drink more water.

Not necessarily. In fact, drinking too much water can actually deplete you of your electrolytes. You need to make sure you are replacing your electrolytes as you are drinking water.

Myth #2: If you are retaining water, then you need to lower your sodium intake.

Wrong. You actually need an increase in high quality Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt to balance out your body’s water when on a low carb diet. When you are eating a diet high in sugar and carbs, your kidneys retained water and sodium. On the other hand, when you are eating a low carb, ketogenic diet, your kidneys let go of water weight and electrolytes, including sodium. So, it is really important to replace the sodium as well as potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Myth #3: All Protein is good for me, not matter what the form.

Actually, fast food or cheap protein can cause water retention, while high quality protein can help the body let go of water. I do not recommend a high protein diet — too much protein is hard on the liver and the kidneys, and excess protein that our body doesn’t really need will be converted into glucose or sugar through a process called Gluconeogenesis.

3 Water Retention Truths:

Truth #1 : Increase your Potassium.

Yes this is true. However, keep in mind Potassium and Sodium need to be balanced perfectly in the body to alleviate water retention and provide optimal cellular function.

Symptoms of low Potassium are:

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sugar cravings
  • Constipation
  • High insulin
  • Muscle weakness
  • Anxiety, and insomnia

Truth #2: Increase your intake of veggies. Vegetables help push fluid out of the body and are naturally full of necessary vitamins, electrolytes and nutrients.

Truth #3: Eliminate Sugar and Gluten. They cause the body to hold onto water, because when the body becomes “inflamed”, it retains water. Why? Your body stores glycogen (sugar) in the muscles and throughout the body. And, where glycogen is, water is. When you stick to a low carb diet, you release your glycogen stores (sugar) from your muscles, and you “let go” of water. Furthermore, insulin causes your kidneys to retain water, and insulin is more present with a high carb diet and less so with a ketogenic or low carb diet. I am sure you all know the “puffy” feeling you get after a night of pizza and beer!
